16/05/2025 - This Week In Year 5

Date: 14th May 2025 @ 8:22am

This week, Year 5 have immersed themselves in the world of Victorian England. In English, they have been exploring Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, learning about the harsh realities of workhouse life and the struggles faced by children in the 19th century. These lessons will lead into next week’s exciting writing task: crafting persuasive letters to improve conditions in Victorian workhouses.

In Design and Technology, Year 5 have put their creativity to the test by making traditional Victorian rag rugs. Using scraps of fabric and learning traditional techniques, they discovered how families in the 19th century reused old materials to make practical and decorative items for the home.

It’s been a week full of history and creativity—and we can’t wait to see everyone’s persuasive letters next week!
