Nursery Blog – Life Cycle of a Chicken 🐣🐥
Date: 14th May 2025 @ 1:54pm
What an egg-citing week we’ve had in Nursery! This week, we’ve been learning all about the life cycle of a chicken – and we even had some very special visitors arrive in the classroom to help us!
🥚 Welcome to Our Nursery, Little Chicks!
On Monday, a mysterious delivery of eggs arrived in Nursery. The children were full of guesses about what might be inside – most thought it was chicks, but Mr Garth was sure it was dragons! By Wednesday, we were amazed to see our first few chicks hatching, and by Thursday, all of our new fluffy friends had arrived. The children were fascinated watching the chicks peck their way out, using brilliant vocabulary like egg, hatch, chick and hen.
🌱 Family Group Time
We built on our previous learning about butterflies and sunflowers to understand the chicken’s life cycle. The children confidently ordered the stages using play blocks, showing how much they’ve learned about growth and change.
🎨 Creative Learning
During our observational drawing activity, the children explored textures, shapes and colours to represent the chicks, giving meaning to their marks and using their senses to describe what they could see and feel.
🔢 Maths Focus
In maths, we practised tricky skills like one more and one less, using the leftover Easter chicks to help us count and visualise the changes. The children really impressed us with their focus and number language!
💪 Gross Motor Fun
We acted out each stage of the chicken’s life cycle using our bodies: curling into tiny eggs, stretching and wobbling like hatching chicks, flapping and pecking like fluffy chicks, and standing tall and scratching the ground like hens!
🏴☠️ Phonics Focus
This week, we became pirates and explored the sound Rr! The children had fun finding objects and words that begin with R, practising their sounds with enthusiasm.
💬 PSHE – Working Together
In our PSHE sessions, we read The Wall, a lovely story that helped us talk about differences in opinion and how we can work together to create something beautiful – even if we all have different ideas!
It’s been a week full of wonder, curiosity, and joyful learning – we’re so proud of how gently and kindly the children welcomed our new chick friends to Nursery! 🐣
