Policing Nursery: Learning About Local Heroes
Date: 20th Jan 2026 @ 9:08am
Over the last couple of weeks in Nursery, our learning has been focused on local heroes, with a special spotlight on the police and the important role they play in our community.
The children were fully immersed in police-themed play and learning. We explored what police officers do, how they help people, and the equipment they use to keep everyone safe. Through role play, small-world scenes and discussions, the children confidently shared their ideas and asked thoughtful questions.
One of the highlights was solving some very serious Nursery crimes… committed by our cheeky teddy bears! 🧸
The children became detectives, looking for clues, predicting what might have happened and talking through their ideas together. This supported communication and language, problem-solving and early reasoning skills — all while having lots of fun.
Our maths learning linked closely to the theme. Children counted objects to 10, practised 1:1 counting and worked out whether we needed one more or one less when items mysteriously went missing (thanks again, Teddy!). Maths was woven naturally into play, helping children build confidence with numbers in meaningful ways.
We were also incredibly lucky to welcome PCSO Andrew Bigland into Nursery. The children loved meeting a real police officer, exploring his uniform and equipment, and learning how he helps people in the community. They were so proud to share their knowledge and asked some brilliant questions — a real highlight for everyone.
Across these weeks, the children showed growing confidence, curiosity and independence. From painting police officers and vehicles, to counting evidence and solving crimes, it’s been a busy, exciting and memorable start to our Local Heroes learning.
We’re so proud of how engaged the children have been — and we can’t wait to continue our journey into learning about chefs and restaurants next!
