This Week in Reception (05/10/26)
Date: 8th Oct 2026 @ 9:55am
This week in Reception we began our new learning journey with the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood. The children were excited to explore the story and quickly became familiar with the main characters, including Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma, the Woodcutter and, of course, the Big Bad Wolf!
We started by reading and retelling the story together, encouraging the children to join in with repeated phrases and discuss what was happening at different points in the tale. They showed fantastic listening skills and enjoyed sharing their ideas about the characters and events. We talked about how Little Red Riding Hood was feeling throughout the story and discussed the importance of listening to trusted adults and staying safe.
In our communication and language sessions, the children used new vocabulary such as forest, basket, cottage, path and disguise. They enjoyed acting out the story in our role-play area, taking on different character roles and creating their own adventures inspired by the book.
Our creative activities included designing and decorating Little Red Riding Hood's cloak, painting woodland scenes and making character puppets. The children showed great imagination and creativity as they recreated parts of the story through art and small world play.
In literacy, we focused on developing story vocabulary and sequencing. The children worked hard to recall the beginning, middle and end of the story and used picture cards to retell the events in the correct order. Many children were beginning to use story language such as "Once upon a time" and "Suddenly" in their play and discussions.
In maths, we continued to develop our counting skills through practical activities linked to the story. The children counted items in Little Red Riding Hood's basket, matched quantities and practised recognising numbers in fun, engaging ways.
Throughout the week, the children have shown great enthusiasm for learning and have enjoyed immersing themselves in the world of fairy tales. We are looking forward to continuing our Little Red Riding Hood learning next week as we explore the woodland setting in more detail and take part in even more exciting story-based activities.
