This Week in Reception WB 12/10/26
Date: 15th Oct 2026 @ 9:34am
What a busy and exciting week we have had in Reception!
In Literacy, the children have continued exploring the story of Little Red Riding Hood. They worked together with their friends to create story maps, drawing pictures to show the key events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. This helped the children to retell the story in their own words and talk about what happened to the different characters. Using teamwork and discussion, they showed a growing understanding of story structure and sequencing.
In Maths, we built on our learning from last week, when we explored one more. This week, the children focused on one less and investigated what happens when we take one away each time. Through songs, rhymes, counting activities and practical resources, they practised finding one less than a number and began to notice patterns as the numbers got smaller. The children enjoyed using objects to count, remove and check their answers.
In Understanding the World, the children have been learning about maps and our local area. We looked at simple maps and identified familiar places such as school, homes, roads and parks. The children talked about landmarks they see on their journey to school and worked together to create their own simple maps, helping them develop an understanding of routes and locations.
On Friday, we marked Black History Month by learning about Floella Benjamin and her journey from Trinidad to England. We listened to her story, discussed how she may have felt when moving to a new country, and talked about the importance of being brave and making new friends. The children then created beautiful portraits of Floella, carefully looking at her features as they drew. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity and learn about an inspirational person.
We are very proud of all the hard work the children have shown this week and look forward to sharing more of their learning next week!
