🌟 A Busy and Brilliant Week in Year 1! 🌟
Year 1 have had a very busy and exciting week, full of hands-on learning, creativity, and lots of thoughtful discussions. Here's what we’ve been up to:
🧮 Maths – Volume and Capacity
In Maths, we’ve been learning about volume and capacity. The children had fun exploring the water area, comparing how much different containers could hold. We practised using words like full, empty, half full, and nearly full, and we worked together to make predictions and test them out. Lots of splashy fun with fantastic learning!
📚 English – Dragons, Fire Safety, and Fantastic Descriptions
In English, we read the story No Dragons for Tea, which helped us learn about fire safety in a fun and memorable way. The children created bright and bold fire safety posters to remind everyone what to do in an emergency.
We also wrote character descriptions of the dragon from the story. This week, we focused on using expanded noun phrases to add extra detail to our writing. We had “a large, friendly dragon with glittering green scales” and “a brave, flame-breathing dragon with golden eyes.” The children did a brilliant job using adjectives to make their writing come to life!
🔍 Science – Marvellous Materials
In Science, we’ve continued learning about materials. We explored which materials would be best for different jobs – like building a house, making a raincoat, or creating a comfy teddy. The children thought carefully about the properties of materials, using words like strong, waterproof, and soft to explain their choices.
📖 RE – Special Books and the Qur’an
In RE, we have been learning about the Qur’an, and why it is a sacred text for Muslims. The children showed great curiosity and respect as we discussed how the Qur’an is treated with care and why it is so important to people of the Islamic faith. We also continue to enjoy sharing and reading some of our favourite books together as a class — story time is always a special part of our day.
🎾 PE – Tennis and Football Fun
In PE, we’ve been learning to play tennis, practising how to hit a target with the ball. The children are showing great hand–eye coordination and we’re almost ready for Wimbledon!
We also thoroughly enjoy Gary’s football sessions every Thursday – there’s lots of energy, skills practice, and smiling faces all around.
🎶 Music – Rhythms and Songs with Mrs Lord
In Music, we played exciting rhythm games with Mrs Lord and sang some of our favourite songs as well as some new songs. Everyone enjoyed using their voices and keeping the beat together!
🎭 Harmony Pledge and Class Assembly
This week, we learned about the Harmony pledge, focusing on the promise to “be a performer.” The children have been practising confidently for our upcoming class assembly, working hard on their lines, songs, and actions. We can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve prepared!
👕 Non-Uniform Day & Donations
We really enjoyed non-uniform day – thank you for all the generous donations of toys and chocolate!
Just a reminder that next week’s donations are bottles (e.g. shampoo, fizzy water, bubble bath). Your support is greatly appreciated!
⭐ We’re so proud of all the effort, creativity, and kindness Year 1 have shown this week. Great job, everyone!
Have a restful weekend and we look forward to more fun and learning next week!
