This Week In Year 1 (WB 04.05.26)
Date: 7th May 2026 @ 2:24pm
This week in Year 1 we have continued enjoying the story Handa's Surprise in English. The children have been thinking carefully about the characters and events in the story and used their ideas to write short diary-style sentences using the word “I”. We were very impressed with how the children tried hard to write independently and share their thoughts and feelings just like a diary writer.
In Maths, we have been learning all about directional language. The children practised using words such as forwards, backwards, left and right through fun games and activities. We especially enjoyed moving around the classroom while following and giving directions to our friends!
In Science, we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. The children identified and labelled features such as the roots, stem, leaves and petals using Purple Mash. Some children even challenged themselves to draw and label flowers independently, showing fantastic confidence and care with their learning.
In Geography, we explored the weather conditions in Kenya and compared them to the weather here in the United Kingdom. We talked about how the climate can affect the way people live and the types of homes they might have. The children enjoyed looking at different styles of houses and were very creative when drawing and making their own homes.
There has also been lots of excitement around the corridor this week as Reception welcomed some very special visitor chicks! The children have loved stopping to look at the new arrivals and watching them grow and move around.
It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 1 and we are very proud of all the children for their enthusiasm and hard work!
