This Week In Year 1 (WB 13.07.26)

Date: 16th Jul 2026 @ 2:55pm

🌟 Year 1 Weekly Blog 🌟

We have had another wonderful week in Year 1 and the children have worked incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum. It has been lovely to see their confidence continue to grow as we approach the end of the year.

📚 English

In English this week, we have continued learning about Samuel Pepys and his famous diary from the time of the Great Fire of London. The children explored what Samuel Pepys experienced during the fire and used this knowledge to write their own short diary entries in role as Samuel Pepys.

They thought carefully about the sights, sounds and feelings he may have experienced and used these ideas to create some fantastic pieces of writing.

🔢 Maths

In Maths, we have been consolidating our learning from across the year. The children have practised a range of skills including:

  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division

They have worked hard to apply their knowledge and explain their thinking when solving different mathematical problems.

🔬 Science

In Science, we have continued our learning about materials and their properties. The children have been identifying different materials and discussing why they are suitable for particular purposes.

We have also been spotting materials in our everyday environment and thinking about their properties, such as whether they are strong, flexible, waterproof or transparent.

🏛️ History

This week, we completed our History topic on The Great Fire of London. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about this important event and have developed a good understanding of how London has changed since 1666.

We have loved hearing their questions and seeing their enthusiasm throughout the topic. It has been a fantastic unit of learning and a wonderful way to explore the past.

⚽ Football Tournament

On Thursday, we had a very exciting start to the day with our intra-unit football tournament. The children had an amazing time taking part and were eager to show off the football skills they have been developing.

It was fantastic to see such great teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the morning. Most importantly, everyone had lots of fun!

☀️ End of Year Message

A reminder that school closes on Tuesday 21st July for the summer holidays.

As this will be our final Year 1 blog, we would like to take this opportunity to say what an absolutely amazing year we have had with all of the children. It has been a privilege to watch them grow in confidence, develop new skills and make fantastic progress in their learning.

We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved this year. They have worked hard, shown resilience, been kind friends and approached every challenge with enthusiasm and determination.

We would also like to thank all parents and carers for your continued support throughout the year. It has been greatly appreciated and has helped the children to flourish.

We wish all of our Year 1 children the very best as they move on to Year 2. We know they will continue to shine and make us proud.

Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer, and thank you for being part of such a fantastic year.
