Year 1 Weekly Blog

What a fantastic and busy week we have had in Year 1!

In English, we have been enjoying the story The Great Dragon Bake Off and learning all about Flamie and his love of baking. The children have loved talking about their favourite parts and sharing their ideas. We have been practising how to start our own stories in exciting ways, using openers such as “Once upon a time,” “One sunny day,” and “One day.”The children came up with some brilliant story beginnings—there are definitely some future authors in our class!

In Maths, we have been learning all about money. We have been recognising coins and notes, matching them to the correct amounts, and comparing different values. The children have worked really hard and have enjoyed using real-life contexts to help them understand. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow throughout the week.

This week has also had a fun STEM focus as part of our wider curriculum. We became engineers and built our very own catapults to try and break through castle defences! The children researched different types of catapults, designed their own models, and made improvements to make them stronger and help objects travel further or higher. There was lots of excitement during our testing time, and the teamwork and problem-solving skills on display were fantastic. We have had so much fun learning in a hands-on way!
