Year 1 Weekly Blog
This week in Year 1 we have had another busy and exciting week of learning through our continuous provision activities.
In English, we have been enjoying the story Tell Me a Dragon by Jackie Morris. The children loved exploring the different dragons in the story and thinking about how they might look, move and feel. We focused on using adjectives to describe dragons, such as fiery, sparkly, enormous and gentle. During our provision time, the children had opportunities to design and describe their own dragons, thinking carefully about the words they could use to make their descriptions more interesting.
In Maths, we have been learning about division through sharing. The children have been practising sharing objects into equal groups using concrete resources such as counters and cubes. We also began to represent our sharing using pictures, helping us move from practical learning to pictorial methods. The children worked really hard to make sure each group had the same amount.
In Science, we continued our learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The children explored different animals and thought carefully about what they eat. Through sorting activities and discussions, they practised categorising animals into the correct groups depending on their diet.
In History, we have continued our topic about castles, focusing on how castles have changed over time. We looked at pictures of different castles and talked about how they were built in the past compared to castles that still stand today. The children enjoyed spotting similarities and differences and discussing why castles were built the way they were.
We have also been very busy this week creating our Mother’s Day cards. The children put lots of effort into making them special and we hope the recipients love them!
