This Week In Year 1 (WB12.10.26)

Date: 13th Oct 2026 @ 1:43pm

We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year 1! 😊 The children have worked hard across the curriculum and enjoyed lots of hands-on activities.

πŸ“š English

This week, we have continued reading The Lonely Beast. We recapped the story maps we created last week and used them to help us retell parts of the story. The children wrote simple sentences using time adverbials such as first, then and finally to sequence events and retell the story. βœοΈπŸ“–

πŸ”’ Maths

In Maths, we have been learning to add and subtract using a number line. The children carefully practised making hops forwards and backwards, making sure they landed on the lines and not the "hot lava" in between! πŸ”₯ This helped us develop accurate counting skills and build confidence with addition and subtraction. βž•βž–

πŸ—ΊοΈ Geography

We have continued learning about our local area. In provision, the children have been creating their own 3D maps using junk modelling materials and thinking carefully about how to represent local landmarks and features. πŸ˜οΈπŸ—ΊοΈ

This week, we also went on a walk around the local area, looking out for human features such as shops, houses, mosques and parks. The children were excellent ambassadors for our school and enjoyed spotting familiar places. 🚢🏽‍♀️πŸͺπŸ‘πŸ•ŒπŸŒ³

🧍 Science

In Science, we have been investigating how we are all different. We explored similarities and differences between ourselves and our classmates and celebrated what makes each of us unique. 😊

❀️ RE

In RE, we have been learning about how Muslims prepare themselves for prayer and worship. We created a role-play area with bowls of water, prayer mats, scarves and a Qur'an. The children enjoyed becoming "mini teachers" as they demonstrated to each other what they had learned about preparing for prayer. πŸ•Œβœ¨

πŸ‘« PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about the importance of sharing. We discussed how sharing can help us build positive friendships and show kindness towards others. πŸ’›

πŸš€ Black History Day

This week, we celebrated Black History Day by learning about Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space. πŸŒŸπŸš€ The children learned facts about her life and achievements, created their own split-pin astronauts and even took part in a special journey into space. Don't worry, we made it back in time for home time! πŸ‘©πŸΎ‍πŸš€πŸŒβœ¨

πŸ“’ Notices

πŸƒ PE Days: Class 3 and Class 4 have PE on Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit.

πŸ“– Homework: Please read regularly with your child at home and remember to write in their reading record.

⭐ Reading at home is extremely important as it helps children develop their phonics skills, including sounding out words and blending sounds confidently.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a wonderful week!
