This week in Year 6 …WB 19.01.26

This week in Year 6, we’ve been working hard across different subjects and showing just how much we can challenge ourselves when we focus and persevere.

In maths, we have been learning how to calculate missing angles. We used our knowledge of angles on a straight line, around a point, and within shapes to work out unknown angles. We practised spotting what information was important, choosing the right strategy, and explaining our reasoning using correct mathematical vocabulary. At first, some questions were tricky, but with careful thinking, modelling, and lots of practice, we became more confident and accurate. We learned that showing our working really helps when problems become more complex.

In English, we have been writing a recount inspired by The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This powerful, wordless book encouraged us to think deeply about feelings such as confusion, fear, hope, and belonging. We imagined ourselves as the main character and wrote in role, describing their journey to a strange new land. We focused on using descriptive language, expanded noun phrases, and varied sentence starters to bring emotions and experiences to life. Because the book has no words, we had to be creative and infer meaning from the illustrations.

Both lessons helped us develop important skills: problem-solving in maths and empathy and creativity in writing. We are proud of the effort we’ve shown and how we continue to push ourselves to improve. Year 6 learning is challenging, but we are rising to it every day! 💪📚✏️
