Year 1 Weekly Blog
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to school for our final half term of the year! We hope that all our families had a wonderful and blessed Eid and enjoyed a lovely half-term holiday. It has been fantastic to see everyone back in school, ready for lots of learning and fun.
English
This week in English, we have been reading Vlad and the Great Fire of London. We are really enjoying learning about Vlad the flea and his experiences during the Great Fire of London. We also learned about a famous diarist called Samuel Pepys and discovered that he buried his cheese to keep it safe from the fire!
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We have been making number blocks and deciding whether they are odd or even. We have also been sorting Numicon pieces into odd and even groups to help us understand the difference.
Topic
Our topic lessons have continued to focus on the Great Fire of London. Did you know that there was no fire brigade in London in 1666? People had to fill leather buckets with water from the River Thames and pass them along to help put out the fire. We have enjoyed learning about how different life was in the past.
RE
In RE, we have been learning about how stories can help us make good choices. We read Androcles and the Lion and discussed the importance of kindness and how we can lead kind and caring lives.
Phonics
We have been working very hard in our phonics lessons this week as we prepare for our Phonics Screening Check next week. The children have shown great enthusiasm and determination, and we are very proud of how well they are doing.
