Year 1 Newsletter

What an exciting week we have had in Year 1!

Both classes enjoyed a wonderful trip to the library this week and the children absolutely loved it. During the visit, the children were given their own sketchpads to draw in and spent time exploring patterns around the gallery. They then used printing inks and rollers to create beautiful prints of their patterns. It was a fantastic day full of creativity and fun.

We were also incredibly proud of the children for the sensible way they walked to the library and for their outstanding behaviour throughout the trip. They should all feel very proud of themselves.

Thank you for your continued support with trips and visitors. Please remember to make a contribution towards the cost of trips and visitors on ParentPay if you have not already done so.

English

In English this week, Year 1 have been reading The Ugly Five, which we discovered were actually the “Lovely Five”! We have been learning all about different African animals in preparation for writing and performing our own poems next week.

Maths

In Maths, the children have been learning about fractions. We have been exploring what “a half”, “a quarter” and “a whole” mean through colouring and recognising fractions.

You could help at home by:

  • Cutting your child’s food into halves and discussing the two equal parts.
  • Cutting food into quarters and talking about the four equal parts.

Geography

In Geography, we continue to learn about Kenya and how life in Kenya is similar to and different from life in the UK.

Science

In Science, we have been learning about the different parts of trees, such as the trunk and branches. We have also learnt that some trees lose their leaves while others stay green all year round.

RE

The children continue to learn about making good choices in RE. This week, we focused on how Buddhists make good choices.

PSHE

In PSHE, the children have continued learning how to keep happy and healthy as part of one of our Harmony pledges: #BeSafeHappyAndHealthy.

Computing

The children have used Purple Mash this week to label trees and flowers and to create sunflower artwork. Please encourage your child to log in independently at home whenever possible.

Provision and PE

The children continue to work incredibly hard during provision time and we are so impressed with the work they are producing.

Class 4 also enjoyed a special dance PE lesson this week with Miss Hayley — they loved it!

PE was slightly different this week due to KS2 SATs but will return to normal next week:

  • Class 4: Monday and Friday
  • Class 2: Tuesday

Important Reminders

  • Please continue to read with your child every day.
  • The Phonics Screening Check will take place in June and daily reading really helps to build confidence and fluency.
  • Homework is set on Purple Mash and can also be found on the school website under “Class Pages”.

Thank you again for your continued support.
