This Week in Year 1 – Curriculum Week, Creativity & Celebrations!
It’s been another exciting and busy week in Year 1 at Greenhill Academy, packed with creativity, learning, and special visitors!
Maths – Exploring 3D Shapes
In Maths, we have been learning all about 3D shapes. The children have been identifying and describing their properties—including the number of faces, edges, and vertices. We’ve been sorting and grouping shapes based on what they can do, such as rolling or stacking, and using real-life objects to help bring our learning to life.
🟠 Try this at home: See how many 3D shapes your child can spot around the house! Can they name a sphere, cube, cone or cylinder?
Art – Inspired by Charles Demuth
As part of Curriculum Week, Year 1 have been exploring the work of Charles Demuth, a Precisionist painter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the USA. He is known for using straight lines and geometric shapes in his art.
We used rulers and shape templates to create our own fantastic pictures, and even made a Great Fire of London artwork in the style of Demuth. The children did an amazing job combining historical learning with artistic creativity—our classroom display looks fantastic!
🎨 Thank you for your support with Year 1’s incredible Art Gallery—it was wonderful to see so many families celebrating the children’s brilliant work!
RE – Special Books and Sacred Texts
In RE, we’ve been learning about special books and sacred texts. The children thought carefully about books that are important to them and explored texts that are sacred in different religions, such as the Bible, Qur’an, and Torah. They asked thoughtful questions and showed great respect while learning about different beliefs and traditions.
Exciting News – BAFTA Visit!
We had a very special visit from a team at BAFTA this week! The team came to Greenhill Academy to announce the winner of the BAFTA Film Competition – and we’re so proud to share that the winner was Maliha from Year 1!
🏆 Well done, Maliha! What an amazing achievement!
A Big Thank You!
Thank you for your continued support with everything this week – from visiting our Art Gallery to your generous donations for the School Fair. The children also loved Non-Uniform Day and had a fantastic time celebrating together.
