Year 1 Weekly Blog

Year 1 have had a wonderful week!

In English, we have been reading Handa’s Surprise. The children have really enjoyed learning about Handa and her journey. They have been busy writers too, creating their own retell of the story using time adverbials. We are so proud of their efforts! Alongside this, we have explored the story through art and play by painting the fruits from Handa’s basket, printing patterns using real fruit, and even building Handa’s village in the block area. The children also loved retelling the story using small world resources.

In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction. The children have been using part-part-whole models and number lines to help them subtract. They particularly enjoy using practical resources to support their learning.

In Topic, we have been weather forecasters! The children have been learning about different weather patterns across the continent of Africa and exploring how weather can vary from place to place.

In RE, the children have been learning about rules and why it is important to follow them. In PSHE, we have focused on hygiene, especially the importance of brushing our teeth. It has been lovely to hear that many parents have noticed improvements at home—well done, Year 1!

In Science, the children have been exploring flowers in our garden. They took photographs, created drawings, and learned to label different UK flowers. We are very impressed that they can now recognise snowdrops, bluebells, and cow parsley.

In Art, the children have been printing with a variety of shapes and objects. They have experimented with layering their prints to create beautiful patterns, inspired by the artist Tandiwe Muriu.

In PE, we have been learning about team games and the importance of working together.

Year 1 have had a fantastic week, and their behaviour has been outstanding. You may have noticed your child coming home with extra stickers—this is a reflection of their excellent attitude and effort. Well done to everyone!
