🔤 English – Writing Instructions (and Tasting Bread!)

This week, we stepped into the shoes of Thomas Farriner, the baker from Pudding Lane who (accidentally!) started the Great Fire of London. The children had a brilliant time learning how to write clear, step-by-step instructions for how to bake bread – just like Thomas would have done in his bakery. We even got to taste some freshly baked bread !The children used fantastic bossy verbs like “mix,” “knead,” and “bake” in their writing. Great job, Year 1 bakers!

Maths – Division with Arrays and Groups

In Maths, we began learning about division by using arrays and equal groups.

🕰️ Topic – Creating a Timeline of the Great Fire of London

Our history learning took us back to 1666, where we began exploring the events of the Great Fire of London. Together, we created a big class timeline, placing key events in the correct order. The children asked thoughtful questions like “Why did the fire spread so fast?” and “How did people put out fires without hoses?” – we can’t wait to find out more next week!

🙏 RE – Thinking About Special Books

In RE, we’ve started a new topic all about sacred texts. This week, we discussed our favourite books and why they’re special to us. Some children chose adventure stories, while others talked about books that make them feel happy or calm. We made a lovely class floor book display of our chosen books – it was wonderful to see how much joy reading brings to everyone.

🔍 Science – Investigating Materials

Our new science focus is on materials and their properties. The children explored a variety of everyday objects and sorted them based on whether they were hard, soft, bendy, waterproof, or absorbent. There was lots of predicting and testing, and we were very impressed by the scientific thinking happening all around the classroom!

That’s all for now – thank you for your continued support. Don’t forget to ask your child about what they’ve learned and maybe even try baking some bread at home together! 🥖

Have a lovely weekend,
