πŸŒπŸš€ Nursery News: British Science Week – Adaption and Change πŸŒ™βœ¨

Date: 14th Mar 2025 @ 11:19am

What an out-of-this-world week we’ve had celebrating British Science Week! Our focus this week has been on adaption and change, guided by the children’s growing fascination with space and planets. The children have been curious, creative, and incredibly engaged as they explored the wonders of our world—and beyond!

Exploring Our World and Beyond 🌍🌌

We started the week by looking at our environment on a map—starting with our immediate surroundings, then zooming out to explore our local area, the United Kingdom, and finally the entire Earth from space! The children were encouraged to use size-related language such as “bigger/larger” and “smaller” when comparing maps and images. They were amazed at how small our town looked when we zoomed out to see the whole planet!

Rocket Launch Inspiration πŸš€

On Tuesday, the children were thrilled to watch a real rocket launch! Their excitement inspired some fantastic creative play—we built and decorated our own rockets using recycled materials, ready to visit our friends on the moon. The children loved counting down and launching their rockets, just like the real thing!

Landing on the Moon! πŸŒ™

Wednesday was all about problem-solving and creativity! We created "landing devices" with parachutes to make sure our rockets and astronauts could land safely on the moon. The children tested different materials and designs, adjusting their parachutes until they landed softly. This activity encouraged critical thinking and an understanding of how forces work!

Moon Craters and Scientific Investigation πŸŒ‘πŸͺ

On Thursday, we became little scientists! We discussed the difference between the Earth and the Moon, focusing on the fact that the Moon has giant craters. We spoke about how these craters are formed and experimented by using playdough asteroids, dropping them from different heights to create our own craters! The children then measured and recorded the sizes of the craters using bits of spaghetti—what a brilliant way to combine science and maths!

Making the Moon More Colourful 🌺🌻

To finish our science week, the children decided that the Moon is “boring and grey” and needs a splash of colour! They planted some plants in our nursery garden and suggested that we could send them to the Moon so that our friends there could grow food and make it more colourful. This sparked some fantastic conversations about how plants grow and what they need to survive.

Phonics Focus: The Letter ‘S’ 🌟

This week, we’ve also been working on the letter ‘S’ in our phonics learning! The children have been practicing hearing, saying, and recognizing the letter S in words like star, space, and sun. They also enjoyed practicing writing the letter S using chalk and sand trays!

What an incredible week of science, exploration, and creativity! We are so proud of how engaged and curious the children have been. Their natural love of learning continues to shine, and we can’t wait to see where their imaginations take them next! πŸŒŸπŸš€

This week in Class 9

14/03/25- This week in Year 5

Date: 14th Mar 2025 @ 8:14am

We have had a fantastic week in Year 5 this week. The children have started exploring the fire which damaged Notre-Dame cathedral in order to write a newspaper report on the incident next week. We have been interested by the news and have been building our research and vocabulary and have been practicing our use of direct and reported speech.

In Geography, we have been using our 'Marvellous Maps' skills from last half term to develop our maps skills and to progress our konwledge of France and Europe for our Geography topic on France this half term. We have identified where France is on a map of Europe and the countries surrounding it and now we have looked within the country itself at the regions which make up France.

Finally, we have enjoyed our British Science Week learning on the theme "Change and Adapt" Please ask your children about the experiments they have completed in school and what they have learnt.

Have a restful and peaceful weekend and we're looking forward to seeing you again for another great week on Monday.

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 10/3/2025

Date: 13th Mar 2025 @ 4:51pm

Welcome to the Year 1 blog!

In English, we’ve been reading the delightful book Tell Me Your Dragon. The children loved imagining what their very own dragons might look like and using Drama to create them. We’ve worked on using descriptive words to bring our dragons to life, thinking about their colour, size, and special powers. The dragons we’ve created have been amazing! Some can fly through clouds, while others have shimmering scales or breath fire. It’s been fantastic to see how creative the children are with their ideas.

In Maths, we’ve been learning how to divide by 2, 5, and 10. The children have been practising using real-life examples, like sharing sweets between friends or dividing up counting objects into groups. We’ve used fun games and activities to help understand how dividing works. We have moved our learning on by representing the division in a pictorial way.

All the children in Year 1 have taken part in British Science Week our  fun activities was making a wormery! We observed the worms at work and learned how they help keep the soil healthy. The children were amazed at how much the worms dig, and we can’t wait to see the changes in our wormery over time. The whole class loved being scientists for the week!

In History, we’ve been looking at how castles have changed over the years. The children have enjoyed exploring different types of castles, from the early wooden forts to the grand stone castles that we see today. We’ve learned about the features of a castle, such as the drawbridge, towers, and battlements, and how they were designed for defense.

This Week In Reception (WB 10.03.25)

Date: 13th Mar 2025 @ 10:44am

What an exciting week we’ve had in Reception! From storytelling to number games, and celebrating British Science Week, there’s been so much learning and fun to be had. Here's a little peek into what we've been up to:

In English, we explored the delightful story What The Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. The children loved hearing the tale of the clever ladybird and her farmyard friends. They particularly enjoyed retelling their favourite parts of the story. Afterward, the children used their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences about their favourite moments. It was amazing to see how they applied their growing understanding of sounds and letters to create their own sentences. Their enthusiasm for storytelling continues to grow, and we can’t wait to see their confidence develop even further.

In Maths, we focused on ordering numbers to 10. The children had lots of fun during an activity where the cheeky kangaroo made some sneaky changes to the number line while they weren't looking! It created a fun challenge for the children to work together to put the number line back in the right order. Once the number line was restored, the children had a go at cutting out numbers from 1 to 10 and carefully sticking them in the correct order. It was a great way to practice number recognition and sequencing, and they all did brilliantly!

This week also coincided with British Science Week, and our Reception scientists had a wonderful time exploring how things can change and adapt. We learnt about the fascinating adaptations of sea creatures, discovering how different animals have special features that help them survive in their environments. The children were particularly excited to learn about how caterpillars change into butterflies, and we had some creative fun by making our own caterpillar chains to represent this amazing transformation.

To bring science to life, we also took part in some fun and active learning experiences. We did sea creature yoga, stretching and moving like various sea animals—what a fantastic way to get our bodies moving while learning! The children also had the chance to plant potatoes, which sparked plenty of excitement and curiosity about how things grow.

It’s been a week filled with imagination, teamwork, and exploration, and we’ve loved every minute of it. From writing stories to planting seeds, the children have shown such enthusiasm and curiosity, and we’re so proud of all their efforts.

We can’t wait for next week’s adventures!

Learning in Class 7

Date: 12th Mar 2025 @ 3:11pm

This week in Class 7 we celebrated British Science Week, it's the perfect time to explore the wonders of nature right in our own classrooms and gardens! Science is all around us, and one of the most exciting ways to connect with it is by planting and growing our own food. This year, we’re focusing on a hands-on activity that’s perfect for students of all ages: deseeding and planting tomato seeds!

Tomatoes are not only delicious and healthy, but they are also a fantastic way to engage with biology, sustainability, and the science behind plant growth. Growing tomatoes from seed is a great learning experience that connects students to the natural world and shows how tiny seeds can transform into the food we enjoy every day.

This activity is an ideal way to bring science to life during British Science Week. Not only does it promote environmental awareness, but it also provides a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about plant biology, photosynthesis, and the lifecycle of a plant—all while fostering a sense of achievement as they watch their plants grow!

We had the best afternoon ever!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 3/3/2025

Date: 6th Mar 2025 @ 1:58pm

This week in English, we worked on creating our own alternative endings for the beautiful story The Kiss That Missed by David Melling. In the book, a kiss is sent by a King to his prince but misses and travels far away, creating a fun adventure. We used our imagination to describe new places where the kiss could land.  We voted for our favourite idea and as a class chose a beach or outer space. We also created new characters to add to the story.

Each of us came up with our own ideas for what happened after the kiss missed and we loved hearing everyone’s creative endings!

In Maths this week, we focused on multiplying by 10 5 and 2, a key skill for Year 1. We used lots of fun ways to understand how multiplying works. We used dienes to help us multiply by 10, hands to help us multiply by 5 and socks to help us multiply by 2.

In Science, we’ve been learning about herbivores—animals that only eat plants. This week, we looked at pictures of different herbivores and discussed what makes them special.

We also talked about how herbivores are important for the environment because they help keep the plants healthy by eating them and helping them grow back.

Our topic work this week was all about castles! We discovered what makes a castle different from a house or a palace. We learned that a castle has things like:

  • High walls to protect the people inside.
  • Towers that help you see far away to spot any dangers.
  • Moats to keep unwanted guests out.

After learning all about castles, we decided to make a video of our findings which you will be able to see in our year group assembly soon

This Week In Reception (WB 03.03.25)

This week in Reception, we've had another exciting adventure as we continue to explore the theme of the farm! We started the week by reading the delightful book A Day at Greenhill Farm, which helped bring our recent trip to the farm to life. The children absolutely loved talking about their experiences, sharing all the wonderful sights, sounds, and animals they saw.

Each child picked their favourite part of the trip and expressed their thoughts through drawings and writing. It was fantastic to see how they used their imaginations, drawing their favourite moments and writing simple sentences to describe them.

In Maths, we continued to explore subtraction through hands-on activities. The children enjoyed using objects to help them understand that when we take away, the number gets smaller. These practical lessons really help bring maths concepts to life!

This week, we also explored the wonderful world of farm animals and their babies. The children learned about the different names of baby animals and had fun matching adult animals to their young ones.

On Wednesday, we celebrated World Book Day in style! The children came to school in their cosy pyjamas and shared their favourite books during Storytime. It was a lovely way to encourage a love of reading and storytelling in a fun and relaxed setting.

It’s been another busy and exciting week in Reception! We look forward to more learning and fun next week!

Nursery News: Week 2 – Spring 2: Why Does That Happen? πŸŒ™πŸ’‘

Date: 5th Mar 2025 @ 7:57am

This week, our little learners have been investigating light and dark as part of our exciting “Why Does That Happen?” topic! Our focus book, “Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear?” by Martin Waddell, has helped us explore the concept of light and how it can help us see in the dark.

Exploring Light and Dark πŸ”¦βœ¨

To bring our learning to life, we introduced a light box and torches into our classroom, creating a magical space for the children to experiment with shadows, reflections, and brightness. The children loved investigating different materials and how light shines through them, sparking some fantastic discussions and curiosity!

Family Group Learning: Patterns and Problem-Solving πŸ”’

Our mathematical learning continued this week as we built upon our understanding of repeating patterns. Using colourful counting cubes and peg boards, the children created their own patterns, strengthening their problem-solving skills and early mathematical thinking.

Gross Motor Development: Parachute Play πŸŒ…πŸŒ™

Outdoors, we strengthened our gross motor skills with an exciting parachute game! The children were shown flashcards representing different daytime and nighttime activities, such as sunrise and sunset, and they had to decide what action to perform with the parachute. This active learning helped reinforce their understanding of how the world changes between day and night.

Sorting Day and Night Activities 🌞🌜

One of our favourite activities this week was our day and night sorting challenge. The children worked in small groups with two large sheets of paper—one labeled daytime and the other nighttime. They were given picture cards showing different activities and had to decide where each one belonged! This encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and reasoning skills as they explained their choices to their friends.

Phonics Fun: The Letter ‘M’ ✏️🎡

This week, our phonics focus has been on the letter ‘M’! The children have been practicing saying, hearing, and recognizing the letter M in different words. We’ve enjoyed playing listening games, spotting objects that start with M, and even practicing mark-making to form the letter. Some children even tried writing "M" in sand and shaving foam for extra fun!

What’s Next? πŸ”

Next week, we will continue to spark curiosity as we explore how things work through more hands-on investigations. Thank you for your continued support, and we can’t wait to share more of our learning journey with you!

As part of our exciting new topic, "Amazing Animals," our class recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Cockfield Farm. This trip served as the perfect WOW starter to launch our learning and offer the children hands-on experiences with a variety of animals. From riding on a tractor to meeting adorable baby animals, it was a day filled with discovery, fun, and learning.

Our journey began with a smooth ride on the coach, with everyone buzzing with excitement about the day ahead. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the friendly staff at Cockfield Farm, who guided us through a fun-packed itinerary, giving the children a chance to interact with the animals up close.

One of the highlights was riding on the back of a tractor! The children were thrilled as they climbed aboard and enjoyed a bumpy ride through the farm's scenic fields. It was a fantastic way to kickstart the adventure and get a closer look at the farm's layout.

Next, the children had the opportunity to meet and stroke some of the farm’s tiniest residents. The baby rabbits and chicks were an instant hit. With their soft fur and tiny, fluttering wings, the children couldn’t wait to gently hold them, learning about the care and needs of these young animals.

The excitement didn’t stop there. The children also had the chance to feed larger animals, such as goats, which were eager to munch on fresh vegetables. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see the difference between smaller and larger animals, as well as learn about their different diets and habits.

As a sweet treat to round off the day, the children had the chance to enjoy a ride on a charming carousel. It was the perfect way to end our visit, with smiles all around as the children enjoyed the gentle spin.

Our trip to Cockfield Farm not only offered the children a fantastic opportunity to learn about different animals, but it also helped them to make real-world connections to our classroom learning. The experiences of the day will inspire and enrich our "Amazing Animals" topic, bringing the children’s learning to life.

We are incredibly grateful to the staff at Cockfield Farm for making our trip so enjoyable and educational. The memories of this exciting adventure will stay with the children for years to come, and we can’t wait to continue exploring the fascinating world of animals back in the classroom!

Stay tuned for more updates on our "Amazing Animals" topic!

Year 1 Weekly Blog Week Beginning 24/2/2025

Date: 27th Feb 2025 @ 1:50pm

The children have come back after half term full of energy and enthusiasm to learn.

This week in English, our Year 1 class dove into the delightful story of The Kiss That Missed by David Melling. Here is a link to a video of it if you want to enjoy it at home.

'The Kiss that Missed' read by Karan Brar

We started by only reading the beginning pages of the story and doing some predictions of what would happen in the book. We did some fantastic drama based on our ideas!

Our Big Write is to retell the story using as much exciting vocabualry as possible.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on comparing numbers and counting in twos. The children  have worked hard to understand how to recognize which number is bigger or smaller, using terms like “greater than” and “less than” and using symbols to represent them.

We also started counting in twos. They enjoyed clapping and jumping in twos to make the learning more active and fun! We’ve seen great progress and are excited to continue building on these skills next week when we focus on multiplication.

We kicked off a brand-new topic this week - Courageous Castles. This week the children learned the different parts of a castle and were able to label their own diagram of a castle.

In Science we have begun our learning about carnivores herbivores and omnivores. This week we  strted with carnivores and were able to classify animals according to what they eat.

Nursery News: Week 1 – Spring 2: β€œWhy Does That Happen?” πŸ”βœ¨

Date: 25th Feb 2025 @ 4:10pm

Welcome back to a brand new term! This half term, we are diving into our exciting new topic: “Why Does That Happen?”, where curiosity will lead the way! To name a few, our young explorers will investigate how things work, exploring forces, magnets, cogs, and wind-up toys. Through hands-on activities, we aim to spark curiosity, build critical thinking, and strengthen problem-solving skills—all while developing a deeper understanding of the world around us.

This Week’s Focus: Floating and Sinking

To kick off our new topic, we have been learning all about floating and sinking using the brilliant story “Who Sank the Boat?” by Pamela Allen. The story has captivated the children’s imaginations and set the stage for lots of scientific discovery and inquiry-based learning.

Family Group Learning: Communication and Curiosity

In our family groups this week, we focussed on listening and attention as we read through the story together. The children were encouraged to ask questions and make predictions—who did they think would sink the boat? Why might some objects float while others sink? It was wonderful to see their minds working as they explored these ideas.

Science in Action: Floating and Sinking Experiments

The highlight of our week was our floating and sinking experiment. The children had the opportunity to test different objects in water to see whether they would float or sink. They observed, discussed, and even made predictions before testing each object. This practical, hands-on approach encouraged scientific thinking and early problem-solving skills.

Maths Learning: Repeating Patterns

In our maths learning, we explored repeating patterns. The children loved using body percussion to create patterns with their friends. They stomped, clapped, and tapped out sequences, developing their understanding of pattern recognition and enjoying the rhythm and movement along the way.

What’s Next?

We are so excited to continue our journey of discovery over the coming weeks. The children will explore forces, magnets, cogs, and wind-up toys, learning more about how things work and asking “Why does that happen?” Stay tuned for more exciting updates as our little scientists continue to explore, investigate, and learn!

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you soon! πŸ§ πŸ”ŽπŸŒŸ
