Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 28.5.2025

We’ve had another exciting and busy week in Year 1, full of learning, exploring and discovering new things together. Here's a little peek at what we've been up to!

 

This week in English, we read the wonderful story Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. We had so much fun following Sunny the meerkat on his travels away from his family. After listening carefully and talking about the story, the children had a go at retelling Sunny’s journey in their own words. We focused on using full sentences, time words like “first”, “next”, and “finally”, and remembered to use capital letters and full stops. 

In Maths, we’ve been practising addition using a number line. We learned how to start at the first number and jump forward to add on. The children loved using their fingers and number lines to solve problems. Keep practising those number jumps at home.

This week in Topic, we looked at a real atlas to find some countries in Africa. The children found Kenya, Nigeria, and Egypt on the map, and we talked about what each country might be like. We also looked at where they are in the world compared to the UK. The children were fascinated and asked brilliant questions – we definitely have some budding geographers in Year 1!

Our new Science topic is all about plants! We went on a plant hunt around the school grounds to see what we could find. The children spotted flowers, trees, and even some herbs in our coutyard area. We talked about the different parts of a plant and what they need to grow. We can’t wait to plant our own seeds soon!

In RE, we continued thinking about the idea of belonging. We shared stories and talked about all the different groups we belong to – our families, our class, our school, and other special communities. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how it feels to belong and how we can help others feel included too

This week in Pre-school...

This week we have continued learning about mini-beasts and reading the very hungry caterpillar story. The children have showed understanding by recognising some of the insects in the interest tray.

 

The children have been taking part in story themed activities, counting and matching numbers on caterpillars and  making spiders too. 

This Week In Reception (WB 28.04.25)

This week in Reception, we’ve had a giant-sized adventure as we explored the classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk! The children enjoyed retelling the story using props and puppets and used their growing phonics knowledge to describe both Jack and the Giant. We were so impressed with the fantastic adjectives they came up with – from “scared” and “brave” for Jack to “big” and “angry” for the Giant!

In Maths, we’ve been busy with numbers up to 20. The children practised putting numbers in the correct order and spotting when numbers were either out of sequence or even upside down! They showed great perseverance and teamwork while helping each other to correct mistakes and build confidence with number recognition.

Linking beautifully with our story, we also began learning about how plants grow. The children talked about what seeds need to thrive, such as water, sunlight, and soil. We’ve all planted our own beans and are now eagerly waiting to see if they grow into beanstalks as tall as Jack’s!

It’s been a fun and engaging week full of storytelling, number fun, and hands-on learning. We can’t wait to see what grows next – in the garden and in our learning!

Learning in Class 7 30.04.25

this week Class 7 have been researching, designing and making chocolate. We have been learning all about chocolate in our topic The Ancient Maya and in English we are reading a folktale The Chocolate Tree. The children were so excited about making and designing their wrapper. They loved it!

Nursery Blog – Sam Plants a Sunflower 🌻

This week in Nursery, we’ve been learning all about how plants grow through the story Sam Plants a Sunflower by Axel Scheffler. The children have loved getting their hands dirty and exploring nature up close!

🌱 Family Group Time
We explored the life cycle of a sunflower and talked about what plants need to grow. The children planted their own sunflower seeds and were very excited to take care of them! They also made marks to represent characters from the story, helping to build early writing skills.

πŸ₯ Rhythm and Rhyme
We sang The Seed Song and explored rhythm and sound using musical instruments. The children had so much fun tapping along and listening carefully to the beat!

🎨 Creative Learning
In our teacher-led activity, we practiced painting with detail and talked about the different parts of a plant. The children confidently named parts like the stem, leaves, and petals.

πŸ”€ Phonics Focus
Our focus sound this week was Ee. The children explored words beginning with E, and practiced forming the letter with lots of enthusiasm!

This week in Year 5

We have had a brilliant first week back and have loved seeing the children in school again!

We are starting our learning on Little Red Riding Hood and will be writing diaries from the perspective of the wolf, we are expecting some brilliant writing with some humor and storytelling. We have also began our learning on the Victorians with a great WOW starter afternoon. We explored and researched some Victorian artefacts and had a Victorian classroom experience where we found out what school would have been like for Victorian children; we had such a great time, ask your children what they would think if schools were like that now.

 

It is our class assembly on Thursday 1st May 2025 at 9:05 and we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come and watch to support the children and to watch their hard work come to fruition.

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 21/4/2025

Year 1 have made a fantastic return to school for the Summer Term.

This week in English, we’ve been exploring the brilliant book Meerkat Mail! The children have loved getting to know Sunny the meerkat and his adventurous travels. We focused on writing character descriptions, using lots of exciting adjectives to describe Sunny’s appearance and personality. Ask your child what kind of animal Sunny is and what makes him such an interesting character! 🦊✍️

In Maths, we've been busy practising our counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. We’ve enjoyed using songs, number lines, and even clapping games to help us remember these sequences. We also began identifying odd and even numbers, spotting patterns and using objects to help us group numbers.

We’ve kicked off our new topic all about Africa! The children shared what they already know and what they would like to find out. We looked at the map and located Africa, talked about the weather, animals, and different environments. We’re very excited to learn more about African culture, music, and wildlife over the coming weeks.

In RE, we’ve started thinking about belonging – what it means to be part of a family, a class, and a community. We had a lovely circle time discussing the different groups we are part of and how that makes us feel. We talked about being kind, helpful, and caring members of our class family.

 

This Week In Reception (WB 21.04.25)

This week in Reception, we’ve been embracing all things springtime as part of our learning journey!

In English, we explored the beautiful story Fletcher and the Springtime Blossom. The children were fascinated by the changes that spring brings, especially the blossoming trees. We talked about what blossom is, and how trees begin to change as the weather gets warmer. The children then used their phonics knowledge brilliantly to describe a picture of a blossom tree – they came up with some fantastic descriptive words and sounded them out with increasing confidence!

In Maths, we’ve been going beyond 10 as we dive deeper into numbers. The children have been learning to recognise numerals and match them to quantities, using a range of resources and objects. We've had lots of fun counting, comparing groups and talking about which has more or fewer. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow with these larger numbers!

As part of our Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design, we’ve been learning more about the season of spring. We observed the blossom tree in our EYFS garden and talked about the signs of spring we could see all around us – from blooming flowers to buzzing bees. The children created some beautiful observational drawings of the blossom tree, really focusing on the colours, shapes and details.

It’s been a wonderful week of learning and discovery. We’re so proud of how engaged and curious the children have been – spring has definitely sprung in Reception!

Learning in Class 7 24.4.25

This week Class 7 have had an introduction to the Ancient Maya. We had a WOW starter where we tasted different types of chocolate and chocolate products, made Mayan headdresses and wrote our names using the Mayan writing system. We are very excited about what we will learn.

Nursery Blog – The Very Hungry Caterpillar πŸ›πŸ¦‹

This week in Nursery we have been enjoying the wonderful story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children have been learning all about growth and change through this fun and familiar tale.

🌱 Family Group Time
We explored the story by recalling the main events and talking about how the caterpillar grows and changes. The children did a great job sequencing the story and using this to help understand real-life changes, like how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly!

🍎 Healthy Choices
Using what we already know, we talked about healthy and unhealthy foods. The children loved feeding our very hungry caterpillar only the healthy foods – and were quick to spot which treats he shouldn’t have too many of!

🧩 In Provision
We added special jigsaws showing different types of food to help children sort and identify healthy and unhealthy items. The story props were a big hit too! Children used leaves, an egg, a chrysalis and butterflies to act out the story using their imaginations.

🎨 Creative Learning
In our teacher-led activity, we had a go at symmetry painting! The children painted one side of a butterfly, folded it over, and were amazed to see their colourful symmetrical butterfly appear! They also practiced their fine motor skills by carefully placing coloured spots on butterfly wings and using number language to count and describe their designs.

πŸ”€ Phonics Focus
Our sound of the week was K – the children explored this through rhymes, actions, and games, thinking of words beginning with ‘C’ and listening for the sound in stories.

πŸ’¬ Think Equal
This week in our Think Equal sessions, we focused on speaking and listening. We encouraged the children to work together to come up with ideas to solve problems – learning that teamwork and talking things through helps us all feel heard and supported.

It’s been a fun-filled and thoughtful week in Nursery – well done everyone! πŸ›πŸ¦‹

This week in Class 9

This week in Class 9, the children have been writing an explanation text, which highlights the importance of the Amazon rainforest, and it's benefits to society as a whole. The text has been informative and brilliant to read - why not discuss this with your child at home.

In maths this week the children have been learning about data, where they have created and interpreted bar and line graphs. 

It was lovely to see so many parents attend our 'Open Classroom' this week. We hope you have enjoyed spending time with your child in the classroom and watching their mini performance.

This Week In Reception (WB 31.03.25)

This week in Reception, we’ve been having an exciting and fun filled week.

In English, we explored the delightful story, We’re Going on an Egg Hunt. The children have been practicing retelling the story using key propositional language, such as "under," "behind," and "next to." They then used their creativity to draw pictures related to the story and applied their phonics knowledge to label their pictures, reinforcing both reading and writing skills.

In Maths, our focus has been on spatial reasoning, where the children used different shapes to create and explore various images. This activity helped to strengthen their understanding of shapes, position, and symmetry while developing their problem-solving skills.

In Understanding the World, we turned our attention to the beautiful daffodils that are blooming around us. The children carefully observed the flowers and created some wonderful observational art based on what they saw. We also learned about Easter and discussed why it is an important celebration for Christians. The children made Easter baskets, and to finish off the week with some fun, we had an egg hunt to celebrate!

It’s been a week filled with creativity, learning, and celebration. Have a lovely two weeks off, and we will see you after the holidays!

This week in Year 6...

This week, we’ve been working on lino printing and refugee poems. 

We started by making our own lino tiles. Everyone carved pictures, then used ink to press them onto paper. The prints came out well, and we focused on creating bold, meaningful image. It was tricky at first, but we got the hang of it and had so much fun!

At the same time, we’ve been writing refugee poems. These poems helped us think about what it would be like to leave everything behind because of war or danger. We wrote about the feelings of loss, hope, and survival, and it was a really important way to understand the refugee experience.

This week has been full of learning and creativity, and we’re so proud of what we’ve all created. 

 

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 24/3/2025

In English this week, we began reading an exciting new book, The Great Dragon Bake Off. It’s a fun and magical story about Flamie, a young dragon with a passion for baking. Flamie is an ambitious and brave character, always seeking to prove that dragons can bake just as well as anyone else—if not better! With scales that shimmer like golden sugar, Flamie is fiercely determined but has a soft heart, always putting others’ needs before their own. Flamie’s journey is filled with challenges, as they compete against other creatures in a grand baking contest, all while learning the importance of friendship, teamwork, and believing in one’s abilities. It's a delightful tale full of humor, heart, and some truly magical pastries! We wrote some fantastic openers for our story retell next week!

In Maths this week, we have been learning how to find quarters of shapes and amounts. We explored how to divide shapes into equal parts, and how to calculate a quarter of a number. 

In Science, we’ve been classifying animals based on what they eat. The children  were given different animals and asked to categorize them as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. The task was both educational and interactive, with children researching different species and sharing interesting facts. We were surprised by some of the things we found out - did you know that penguins are carnivores?

In D&T, students have been busy designing their own castles.  They worked in groups to design a castle and decide what would be good materials to use to make it.

In PSHE, the topic of online safety was explored. Students participated in discussions and activities that highlighted the importance of keeping personal information private and being cautious when interacting with others online. They learned about the potential dangers of the internet, such as cyberbullying and online predators, and were given strategies to stay safe.

What a lovely week it has been with Class 9...

What a lovely week it has been with Class 9 once again.

The children have developed a love for learning and are always being the best that they can be.

This week in English, the children are preparing to write an Explanation text about the resourcefulness of the plants found in the Amazon rainforest – It’s been an informative week, and we have learned a lot about the medicinal properties of plants found in the Amazon. Why not test your children’s knowledge about this, I’m sure they have lots of amazing facts that they can share with you.

In maths this week, the children have been learning all about the value of money, they have converted and calculated amounts and have shown great confidence with this.

Finally, the Year 4 team would like to wish Eid Mubarak to all the families who are celebrating, and we hope you have a lovely time with family and friends and can’t wait to hear all about it!

This Week In Reception (WB 24.03.25)

In Reception this week, we've been busy exploring a range of exciting topics across English, Maths, and even special celebrations!

In English, we had a delightful time reading the book Monkey Puzzle. The children were introduced to various jungle animals, and they used sentence stems like "It has..." and "It is..." to describe the different creatures. It was a wonderful way for them to practice describing features and expand their vocabulary!

In Maths, we focused on spatial reasoning and the composition and decomposition of shapes. The children explored how small and large shapes, such as triangles and rectangles, can be combined using lolly sticks to create new shapes and objects, like houses. It was a fantastic way to enhance their understanding of shape properties and build their problem-solving skills.

We've also been learning about the jungle and the diverse animals that live there. This included fun activities and discussions around jungle life, sparking lots of curiosity and excitement!

In celebration of Mother's Day, the children made beautiful handmade cards to express their love and appreciation. They worked hard to create something special, and it was heartwarming to see their creativity shine.

Lastly, we explored the significance of Eid and took part in a fun baking activity, making delicious biscuits to celebrate.

What a fantastic week of learning in Reception! We're looking forward to more adventures next week!

Learning in Class 7 21.3.25

This week we have written the story of Charlie Stinky Socks and the Hunt for the Mummy's Gold. We wrote a whole book with some new clues of our own. This was our best big write and we loved being the authors and illustrators of our own book. Everyone's book is on display in class and we are so proud of them.

This week in Nursery, we have been inspired by the classic story ‘The Little Engine That Could’ by Watty Piper! The children have explored the ideas of push and pull, teamwork, and problem-solving while getting hands-on with exciting activities.

Push and Pull in Action! πŸ”„

In our family groups, we introduced the forces of push and pull, discussing how they help objects move. To bring this to life, the children took their learning outdoors, taking turns pushing and pulling their friends on scooters. This activity encouraged turn-taking, cooperation, and an understanding of how forces work in real life!

Little Engineers at Work! πŸ”§πŸš‚

When the engine in our story stopped working, the children stepped up as engineers! They designed and created their own wheels to help the little engine move again. Using different materials, they thought carefully about how wheels work and why they are important for movement.

Building Train Tracks and Problem-Solving! πŸš†πŸ› 

A real highlight of the week was working together to create a shared train track. However, there was a twist! The teachers sabotaged the tracks by flipping pieces upside down or putting mismatched tracks together. The children had to communicate, problem-solve, and work as a team to figure out how to fix the tracks so the trains could move properly. Their determination and teamwork were incredible!

Measuring Movement in Maths! πŸ“

In our teacher focus activities, the children experimented with rolling wheels down ramps, observing how far they traveled. They carefully measured the distance, comparing different wheels and ramps to see which ones worked best. This activity helped develop their early measuring skills and encouraged them to make predictions.

Exploring 2D Shapes in Our Environment! πŸ”ΊπŸ”΅πŸŸ‘

This week, we have also been exploring 2D shapes in and around our classroom! The children went on a shape hunt, spotting circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles in everyday objects such as windows, tables, and even the wheels of our toy trains! The children had so much fun using mathematical language to describe the shapes they found!

Junk Modelling Engines! πŸ—πŸŽ¨

The children got creative, making their own junk-modelled engines! Using child-friendly woodworking tools, they added wheels to their models, helping them to understand how movement works. They loved testing their creations to see if they could pull a train, just like the little engine in our story!

Phonics Focus: The Letter ‘Oo’ βœοΈπŸ”€

This week’s phonics learning has been all about the letter ‘Oo’. The children practiced recognising and forming the letter and had fun thinking of words that start with ‘O’, such as orange, octopus, and owl! They also enjoyed phonics games and rhymes to help reinforce their learning.

A Fantastic Week of Learning! 🌟

This week has been filled with exploration, teamwork, and hands-on learning. The children have shown fantastic problem-solving skills and creativity, and we are so proud of their achievements!

Learning in Class 7

This week in Class 7 have been looking at pollination and the life cycle of a plant. Science is all around us, and one of the most exciting ways to connect with it is by having the hands on experiences of the parts of a plant and flower.

This activity is an ideal way to bring science to life where children can see all the parts of a flower and what each part plays in the life cycle.

The children had to dissect a flower and label a drawing at the same time when they found that part. They saw the pollen and opened the ovule to see the seeds. The children were amazed and were amazing too!

This week in Year 6...

This week has been busy and exciting! We’ve been working on writing biographies, learning how to organise and research important details about inspiring people. We have found that it’s a great way to practice writing skills. 

The children have  also had a visit from UKEFF, who encouraged donations for long-life food. We have  been asked to bring in items like canned goods, rice, and pasta, etc, to help families in need. Every little bit you contribute makes a big difference!

Finally, we have been continuing to revise for our SATs. With lots of practice in maths, reading, and grammar. The children are  building confidence and are getting ready for the challenge ahead. Keep up the hard work—you’re doing great!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 17/3/2025

Hello, Year 1 families! What an exciting week we've had in class!  Here's a look at what we've been up to:

In English our dragon-themed journey continues! The children have been using their imaginations to create instructions on how to take care of a dragon. Some of the ideas are absolutely magical, and we’ve loved hearing all the creative suggestions!

The children have been using their creative writing skills to write clear and fun instructions, learning about structure and how to use imperative verbs. 

This week in Maths, we’ve been exploring weight and mass in a hands-on way! We started by comparing objects to see which ones are heavier and lighter.  

We then worked on ordering objects by weight. Some of the classeswere very surprised that objects that were the same size could be such different weights.

Next, we used balance scales to measure and compare weights more accurately. The children were thrilled to see how the scales worked, balancing out objects until they were even. And to top it off, we even got to try out the electronic scales to measure some objects in our classroom. It’s been a great week for building our understanding of weight and mass!

In Science, we started learning about omnivores—animals that eat both plants and meat. We explored some examples of omnivores, like bears, foxes, and even humans! The class had some interesting discussions about the different foods omnivores enjoy and how they get the nutrients they need from both plants and animals.

In Design and Technology, we kicked off our learning about structures. We began by talking about the different parts of structures from around the world and the materials used to build them. The children were excited to start brainstorming ideas for their very own castles, which they will be designing and building using recycled materials. They’re already coming up with some incredible ideas!

πŸͺ🐻 Nursery News: Biscuit Bear Week! πŸͺ🐻

What a sweet and exciting week we’ve had in Nursery, focusing on the delightful story ‘Biscuit Bear’ by Mini Grey! The children have thoroughly enjoyed getting creative, using their senses, and strengthening their fine motor skills through fun and engaging activities inspired by the story.

Baking and Biscuit Fun! πŸͺ

To develop our fine motor skills, the children practiced rolling dough and cutting out little bears—just like Biscuit Bear! This activity helped to build strength in their hands and fingers, which supports early writing development. The children loved decorating their bears and were so proud of their creations!

The children showed fantastic listening and attention skills as they discussed the story and predicted what might happen next.

Using Our Senses πŸ«πŸ‘€πŸ‘…

The highlight of the week was our biscuit-tasting session! The children explored different types of biscuits, using their senses to describe them. We spoke about how the biscuits felt (crunchy, soft), how they looked (round, square, chocolatey), and how they tasted (sweet, salty). After lots of careful thinking, the children voted for their favourite type of biscuit—chocolate digestives were a clear winner!

Creative Mark Making 🎨

To support our early handwriting, the children painted their very own Biscuit Bear! They carefully added facial features, working on their pencil grip and control. The results were adorable, and the children loved seeing their bears come to life!

Magnificent Maths

In our maths learning this week we have focussed on exploring and identifying positional language. The children worked together to identify where the bear was positioned, using language such as 'on top of, under and next to'

Phonics Focus: The Letter ‘Gg’ ✏️

Our phonics focus this week has been the letter ‘Gg’. The children practiced hearing and saying the sound in words like goat, gate, and gold. We also practiced writing the letter ‘Gg’ using sand trays and chalkboards, helping to build recognition and confidence.

What a brilliant week of learning and discovery! The children showed fantastic engagement and creativity, and we are so proud of their growing confidence in phonics and fine motor skills. We can't wait to see what exciting learning adventures await us next week! 🌟πŸͺ🐻

This week in Reception, the children have been busy exploring new concepts and developing their skills across a variety of subjects. Here's a glimpse of the exciting things we've been up to!

English: Exploring ‘Hattie Peck’

In English, we’ve been enjoying the story of Hattie Peck, a heartwarming tale about a determined little bird who goes on an adventure to find lost eggs. The children have been retelling parts of the story, creating their own drawings to illustrate scenes, and using their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences that describe their pictures. It’s been a fantastic opportunity for them to practice their writing skills and show their creativity.

Maths: Missing Numbers in Sequences

In Maths, our focus has been on number sequences. The children have been exploring number patterns and learning how to find and fill in missing numbers. Using Numicon pieces, they’ve been adding the missing numbers to complete different sequences. It’s been wonderful to see their problem-solving skills develop as they worked through the challenges!

Knowledge and Understanding: Learning About Eggs

In our Knowledge and Understanding lessons, the children have been learning about the fascinating world of eggs. We’ve explored different types of eggs and their unique characteristics, with the highlight of the week being the chance to hold a real ostrich egg! The children were amazed by its size and texture, and they had many questions about how it compares to other eggs. This hands-on experience sparked lots of curiosity and led to some wonderful discussions.

Exploring the World with David Attenborough

Finally, the children have been learning about the incredible work of Sir David Attenborough. They’ve been inspired by his passion for animals and his efforts to film them in their natural habitats for the world to see. The children were fascinated by the idea of animals living in the wild, and they enjoyed discussing their favorite animals and what makes them unique.

It’s been another fantastic week of learning in Reception, and we can’t wait to see what the next week brings!
