This week, Year 1 have been learning about The Great Fire of London! We have enjoyed reading the story Vlad and The Great Fire of London, written by Kate Cunningham.We were particularly excited to hear that Samuel Pepys buried some very smelly cheese to save it from the fire! We have created graphic novels around this text, drawing our own pictures and writing speech bubbles. We then took our learning into provision where we created graphic novels of our own interests.

In Science, the children have been investigating materials and have enjoyed being "material detectives", discovering different materials around school.

In Maths we have been comparing numbers using greater than and less than symbols. We particularly loved our practical lesson, making number blocks and comparing two numbers.

This has been a short week but we've had a lot of fun and are ready to celebrate Eid!

What a fantastic final week of the half term we’ve had in Year 1!

We had an amazing trip to Gallery Oldham, where we took part in a fun and inspiring print workshop. The children really enjoyed getting creative – exploring different patterns in the galleries, making brilliant designs, and producing their very own prints. Everyone worked so hard and had such a great time!

Back in the classroom, we’ve been continuing our English work on the story "Handa’s Surprise." We’ve really enjoyed getting into role as Handa and imagining how she might be feeling. The children wrote some wonderful diary entries from Handa’s point of view – full of emotion and thoughtful reflections.

In Maths, we’ve been learning about position and direction, using our bodies and shapes to explore words like "left," "right," "forwards," and "turn." It’s been lots of fun using movement to help us understand these new concepts.

As part of our Topic, we’ve been comparing the capital of Kenya – Nairobi – with Oldham. We’ve been thinking carefully about what is the same and what is different, including buildings, transport, and landscapes. It’s been great to learn more about another part of the world.

In RE, we’ve been learning about special ceremonies that show belonging, such as Christenings and Aqiqah. The children asked thoughtful questions and enjoyed sharing what they already know about celebrations in their own families.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and restful half term break. Thank you for all your support this term – we look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Monday, 3rd June!

Year 1 weekly Blog WB 12/5/2025

What a busy and exciting week we've had in Year 1!

In English, we've been reading the lovely story Handa’s Surprise by Eileen Browne. The children absolutely loved following Handa’s journey and learning about all the delicious fruits she packed for her friend. Inspired by the story, we made our very own fruit salad – it was colourful, healthy, and most importantly, delicious! We then used our experiences to write a clear set of instructions for how to make it, using some fantastic imperative verbs like chop, mix, peel, and serve. Great job, everyone!

In Maths, we’ve been learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour. The children have been practising using analogue clocks and are becoming very confident at recognising when it’s half past two or three o’clock – time really does fly when you’re having fun!

Our Topic work has taken us on a journey to Kenya. We’ve been learning all about life in Kenya, including the weather, animals, school, and famous landmarks. The children worked hard to create their own Kenya factfiles, which we’ll soon be using to compare with life here in the United Kingdom. It’s been fascinating to explore the similarities and differences between the two countries!

In Science, we’ve been focusing on plants. We’ve been labelling the different parts of a plant, such as the roots, stem, leaves, and flower, and talking about what each part does to help the plant grow.

Finally, in Art, we’ve been learning some exciting printing techniques in preparation for our printing workshop at the library on Monday. The children have experimented with patterns and textures, and we can't wait to see what beautiful creations they'll come up with during the workshop.

What a fun and fabulous week it’s been in Year 1! Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to across our learning areas:

✏️ English

This week, we’ve been inspired by The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson. The children enjoyed reading about the lovable animals who aren’t quite as “ugly” as they seem! We used our imaginations to write acrostic poems about each of the five animals – the wildebeest, warthog, vulture, hyena, and marabou stork. The children chose fantastic describing words and had lots of fun performing their poems aloud!

➖ Maths

In Maths, we’ve been learning how to subtract using a range of tools and strategies. We used counting objects, pictures, and even number lines to help us “jump back” and find the difference. The children are becoming confident problem-solvers and really enjoyed using cubes and counters to act out the subtraction stories.

🌱 Science

We’ve been getting our hands dirty in Science this week – in the best way! We learned about where plants come from, explored what seeds look like, and even planted our own seeds. The class made careful observations and drawings of different types of seeds, and we’ll be watching closely over the next few weeks to see what grows. Fingers crossed for green shoots soon!

🌍 Topic – Geography

Our Topic work took us all the way to Africa as we began learning about the weather there. We compared African weather to what we experience here in the UK and discovered that some parts of Africa are very hot and dry, while others can be warm and rainy.

🕊️ RE

In RE, we explored the idea of symbols of belonging. The children thought about the groups they belong to—like families, schools, and clubs—and learned how different faiths use symbols to show belonging. We shared pictures and had some thoughtful discussions about what makes us feel included and connected.

We’re so proud of all the hard work the children are doing and can’t wait to see what next week brings!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 28.5.2025

We’ve had another exciting and busy week in Year 1, full of learning, exploring and discovering new things together. Here's a little peek at what we've been up to!

This week in English, we read the wonderful story Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. We had so much fun following Sunny the meerkat on his travels away from his family. After listening carefully and talking about the story, the children had a go at retelling Sunny’s journey in their own words. We focused on using full sentences, time words like “first”, “next”, and “finally”, and remembered to use capital letters and full stops.

In Maths, we’ve been practising addition using a number line. We learned how to start at the first number and jump forward to add on. The children loved using their fingers and number lines to solve problems. Keep practising those number jumps at home.

This week in Topic, we looked at a real atlas to find some countries in Africa. The children found Kenya, Nigeria, and Egypt on the map, and we talked about what each country might be like. We also looked at where they are in the world compared to the UK. The children were fascinated and asked brilliant questions – we definitely have some budding geographers in Year 1!

Our new Science topic is all about plants! We went on a plant hunt around the school grounds to see what we could find. The children spotted flowers, trees, and even some herbs in our coutyard area. We talked about the different parts of a plant and what they need to grow. We can’t wait to plant our own seeds soon!

In RE, we continued thinking about the idea of belonging. We shared stories and talked about all the different groups we belong to – our families, our class, our school, and other special communities. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how it feels to belong and how we can help others feel included too

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 21/4/2025

Year 1 have made a fantastic return to school for the Summer Term.

This week in English, we’ve been exploring the brilliant book Meerkat Mail! The children have loved getting to know Sunny the meerkat and his adventurous travels. We focused on writing character descriptions, using lots of exciting adjectives to describe Sunny’s appearance and personality. Ask your child what kind of animal Sunny is and what makes him such an interesting character! 🦊✍️

In Maths, we've been busy practising our counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. We’ve enjoyed using songs, number lines, and even clapping games to help us remember these sequences. We also began identifying odd and even numbers, spotting patterns and using objects to help us group numbers.

We’ve kicked off our new topic all about Africa! The children shared what they already know and what they would like to find out. We looked at the map and located Africa, talked about the weather, animals, and different environments. We’re very excited to learn more about African culture, music, and wildlife over the coming weeks.

In RE, we’ve started thinking about belonging – what it means to be part of a family, a class, and a community. We had a lovely circle time discussing the different groups we are part of and how that makes us feel. We talked about being kind, helpful, and caring members of our class family.

In English this week, we began reading an exciting new book, The Great Dragon Bake Off. It’s a fun and magical story about Flamie, a young dragon with a passion for baking. Flamie is an ambitious and brave character, always seeking to prove that dragons can bake just as well as anyone else—if not better! With scales that shimmer like golden sugar, Flamie is fiercely determined but has a soft heart, always putting others’ needs before their own. Flamie’s journey is filled with challenges, as they compete against other creatures in a grand baking contest, all while learning the importance of friendship, teamwork, and believing in one’s abilities. It's a delightful tale full of humor, heart, and some truly magical pastries! We wrote some fantastic openers for our story retell next week!

The great dragon bake off/A special Dragon who is not scare/A story about being yourself/read a book

In Maths this week, we have been learning how to find quarters of shapes and amounts. We explored how to divide shapes into equal parts, and how to calculate a quarter of a number.

In Science, we’ve been classifying animals based on what they eat. The children were given different animals and asked to categorize them as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. The task was both educational and interactive, with children researching different species and sharing interesting facts. We were surprised by some of the things we found out - did you know that penguins are carnivores?

In D&T, students have been busy designing their own castles. They worked in groups to design a castle and decide what would be good materials to use to make it.

In PSHE, the topic of online safety was explored. Students participated in discussions and activities that highlighted the importance of keeping personal information private and being cautious when interacting with others online. They learned about the potential dangers of the internet, such as cyberbullying and online predators, and were given strategies to stay safe.

Hello, Year 1 families! What an exciting week we've had in class! Here's a look at what we've been up to:

In English our dragon-themed journey continues! The children have been using their imaginations to create instructions on how to take care of a dragon. Some of the ideas are absolutely magical, and we’ve loved hearing all the creative suggestions!

The children have been using their creative writing skills to write clear and fun instructions, learning about structure and how to use imperative verbs.

This week in Maths, we’ve been exploring weight and mass in a hands-on way! We started by comparing objects to see which ones are heavier and lighter.

We then worked on ordering objects by weight. Some of the classeswere very surprised that objects that were the same size could be such different weights.

Next, we used balance scales to measure and compare weights more accurately. The children were thrilled to see how the scales worked, balancing out objects until they were even. And to top it off, we even got to try out the electronic scales to measure some objects in our classroom. It’s been a great week for building our understanding of weight and mass!

In Science, we started learning about omnivores—animals that eat both plants and meat. We explored some examples of omnivores, like bears, foxes, and even humans! The class had some interesting discussions about the different foods omnivores enjoy and how they get the nutrients they need from both plants and animals.

In Design and Technology, we kicked off our learning about structures. We began by talking about the different parts of structures from around the world and the materials used to build them. The children were excited to start brainstorming ideas for their very own castles, which they will be designing and building using recycled materials. They’re already coming up with some incredible ideas!

Welcome to the Year 1 blog!

In English, we’ve been reading the delightful book Tell Me Your Dragon. The children loved imagining what their very own dragons might look like and using Drama to create them. We’ve worked on using descriptive words to bring our dragons to life, thinking about their colour, size, and special powers. The dragons we’ve created have been amazing! Some can fly through clouds, while others have shimmering scales or breath fire. It’s been fantastic to see how creative the children are with their ideas.

In Maths, we’ve been learning how to divide by 2, 5, and 10. The children have been practising using real-life examples, like sharing sweets between friends or dividing up counting objects into groups. We’ve used fun games and activities to help understand how dividing works. We have moved our learning on by representing the division in a pictorial way.

All the children in Year 1 have taken part in British Science Week our fun activities was making a wormery! We observed the worms at work and learned how they help keep the soil healthy. The children were amazed at how much the worms dig, and we can’t wait to see the changes in our wormery over time. The whole class loved being scientists for the week!

In History, we’ve been looking at how castles have changed over the years. The children have enjoyed exploring different types of castles, from the early wooden forts to the grand stone castles that we see today. We’ve learned about the features of a castle, such as the drawbridge, towers, and battlements, and how they were designed for defense.

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 3/3/2025

This week in English, we worked on creating our own alternative endings for the beautiful story The Kiss That Missed by David Melling. In the book, a kiss is sent by a King to his prince but misses and travels far away, creating a fun adventure.We used our imagination to describe new places where the kiss could land. We voted for our favourite idea and as a class chose a beach or outer space. We also created new characters to add to the story.

Each of us came up with our own ideas for what happened after the kiss missed and we loved hearing everyone’s creative endings!

In Maths this week, we focused on multiplying by 10 5 and 2, a key skill for Year 1. We used lots of fun ways to understand how multiplying works.We used dienes to help us multiply by 10, hands to help us multiply by 5 and socks to help us multiply by 2.

In Science, we’ve been learning about herbivores—animals that only eat plants. This week, we looked at pictures of different herbivores and discussed what makes them special.

We also talked about how herbivores are important for the environment because they help keep the plants healthy by eating them and helping them grow back.

Our topic work this week was all about castles! We discovered what makes a castle different from a house or a palace. We learned that a castle has things like:

High walls to protect the people inside.
Towers that help you see far away to spot any dangers.
Moats to keep unwanted guests out.

After learning all about castles, we decided to make a video of our findings which you will be able to see in our year group assembly soon

The children have come back after half term full of energy and enthusiasm to learn.

This week in English, our Year 1 class dove into the delightful story of The Kiss That Missed by David Melling.Here is a link to a video of it if you want to enjoy it at home.

We started by only reading the beginning pages of the story and doing some predictions of what would happen in the book. We did some fantastic drama based on our ideas!

Our Big Write is to retell the story using as much exciting vocabualry as possible.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on comparing numbers and counting in twos. The children have worked hard to understand how to recognize which number is bigger or smaller, using terms like “greater than” and “less than” and using symbols to represent them.

We also started counting in twos.They enjoyed clapping and jumping in twos to make the learning more active and fun! We’ve seen great progress and are excited to continue building on these skills next week when we focus on multiplication.

We kicked off a brand-new topic this week - Courageous Castles. This week the children learned the different parts of a castle and were able to label their own diagram of a castle.

In Science we have begun our learning about carnivores herbivores and omnivores. This week we strted with carnivores and were able to classify animals according to what they eat.

Year 1 Class Blog - A Busy Week of Learning!

Welcome to our Year 1 Class Blog! This week, we've been having so much fun learning and exploring new topics. Here's a quick look at all the exciting things we've done!

English - The King's New Pants

This week in English, we read the funny and fantastic book The King's Pants. In the story, the King keeps losing his pants, and the people in the kingdom try to make him a new pair.

Inspired by this, we had a creative challenge! Each of us designed our own special pair of pants for the King. Some of us made pants with pockets for his treasures, while others added sparkles and even rainbow colors!

We then wrote letters to the King to tell him all about our amazing new pants design.

Maths - Fractions Fun!

In maths this week, we’ve been learning all about fractions! We looked at how to find half of shapes and amounts.

We also practiced drawing shapes and cutting them into halves to make sure we understood how fractions work.

Science - Exploring Amphibians

This week in science, we learned all about amphibians! We explored creatures like frogs, newts, and salamanders. We discovered that amphibians can live both in water and on land, which makes them really special!

We looked at pictures of different amphibians and talked about their life cycles, from eggs to tadpoles to adults. Some of us even tried to draw our favorite amphibians.

Geography - Physical Landmarks in the UK

In our geography lessons, we’ve been learning about the four countries of the UK and some of their famous physical landmarks. We explored the Loch Ness in Scotland, the River Thames in England, Snowdonia in Wales, and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.

We loved looking at pictures of these places and talked about what makes them so special. Did you know the Giant's Causeway is made of thousands of amazing hexagonal rocks that look like they were placed by giants? It was so interesting to learn about these beautiful natural landmarks!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 27.1.2025

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 1! From exciting trips to Blackpool Tower to learning more about the weather in the United Kingdom, we’ve been busy with all sorts of fun and learning. Here’s a peek into our week:

English – Diary Entry as Paddington Bear: We imagined we were Paddington Bear on a trip to Blackpool Tower! The children wrote amazing diary entries about Paddington’s adventure, describing what he saw and did. In our drama lesson, we brought Paddington’s adventure to life with freeze frames! The children acted out different scenes from his trip, such as climbing the tower and enjoying a day at the beach. It was amazing to see their creativity as they captured key moments in the story!

Maths – In Maths, we’ve been learning how to tell the time! We practiced reading o’clock and half-past times. The children were really excited to use their clocks to show different times of the day. We had lots of fun trying to match the times to our daily routines.

Topic - This week, we continued our exploration of the United Kingdom. The children learned about the different countries that make up the UK and explored the weather and seasons in the United Kingdom We also learned about some of the UK’s famous landmarks, like Big Ben, the London Eye, and of course, Blackpool Tower! The children then used junk modelling to create their own versions of these landmarks. We were really impressed with their creativity and how each model was unique!

Science – In Science, we continued classifying animals. This week, we focused on fish and birds, comparing their similarities and differences. The children learned about fish’s gills and scales and birds' feathers and beaks. They enjoyed sorting animals into the right categories and learning more about their characteristics.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at Parents’ Evening next week! It’s a great opportunity to talk about the progress the children have made and share their learning journey. Also, don’t forget to support the Book Fair at school. It's a perfect time to pick up some new reading material for the whole family.

Welcome to our Year 1 class blog! We've had an exciting week - let us share with you some of the fun and learning we've been doing!

English - The Queen's Hat Adventure

In English, we've been reading a wonderful story called The Queen's Hat. It's all about the Queen's hat flying away and having an adventure all over the UK. Inspired by this story, we decided to write our own versions of the Queen’s Hat story!

In our alternative version, the Queen’s hat visits Oldham and goes on an amazing adventure! The children had a great time imagining where the hat would go and what it would see.

Maths - Adding Numbers and Solving Missing Number Problems

In Maths, we've been having fun with addition and learning all about number bonds to 20! We’ve been solving missing number problems, adding numbers together, and practicing how to find the total when we add two numbers. Some of us even solved tricky word problems and used our number skills to help us.

It’s amazing to see how much we’ve learned and how quick we’re getting with our number skills!

Afternoon Tea and Exploring Great Britain

As part of our exciting start to the topic of Great Britain, we had a special Afternoon Tea in class! We learned about the traditional British custom of afternoon tea, and everyone enjoyed a delicious treat of biscuits and juice. It was a fun way to start our topic, as we discussed the history of Great Britain, famous landmarks, and what makes it such a special place.

We’re looking forward to learning more about the UK in the coming weeks, including its culture, history, and the famous places we’d love to visit!

Science - Classifying Animals

In Science, we’ve been learning all about classifying animals. We had a fun lesson sorting animals into two main groups: wild animals and pets. We learned what makes an animal wild and how pets are different because they live with people

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 16/12/2024

This week started off with our whole school performance of The boy the mole the horse and the fox. We were very proud of all the children who took part either singing or acting.

We came to the end of our topic on dinosaurs and had a fantastic finish when we found a photograph of a dinosaur in our classroom the our cheeky elf had taken overnight. The children wrote a newspaper article about the amazing event !

All the children have now made a moving dinosaur as part of their DT learning andwere very proud of their finished results.

Next term our topic is Great Britain Now and we shall be looking at lots of British landmarks and traditions. In Science we will be looking at classifying animals into their different groups such as mammals, fish and birds.

We hope you all have a fantastic holiday and look forward to seeing you in January.

This week in year 1 we have continued our learning about dinosaurs. In English we have beeen researching dinosaurs ready to write a leaflet next week and in topic we have learned all about the famous paleontologist Mary Anning who made some amazing discoveries which helped the world to know more about dinosaurs. If you ask your chid I'm sure they will be able to tell you all about her!

In Science we have been continuing to learn about the weather in different seasons and in Maths we have been looking at different ways of measuring height and length. Maybe at home your child could order the people or toys from tallest to shortest?

Next week there are lots of Christmas activities planned and rehearsals for our play will be in full swing!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 25/11/2024

This week in year 1 we have watched in amazement as our mystery egg has cracked more and more to reveal a small yellow dinosaur. The children watched in amazement as it was lifted from its egg and eyed them all carefully before letting out a loud roar!

In English we have continued our learning about The Somethingosaur. This week we have followed his journey across plains and mountains in his quest to find his mother. Our Big Write is a retell of the story including some great time connectives to move the story along.

In Maths we have been learning about money, setting up our own Dino Store in the classroom where the children have used coins and notes to buy items related to dinosaurs.May be they could pay for some things in shops while they are out this weekend?

In topic we have been thinking about which sources of evidence about dinosaurs are reliable and which are not - if you ask your child I am sure they will be able to tell you all about it!

Next Thursday is our Winter Fayre and any donations of bottles, chocolate or toys would be very greatfully received. We hope to see you ther!

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 18/11/2024

This week started in a very exciting way in year1 ! We discovered and egg floating in some water outside the classrooms with a set of footprints leading away from it. We described what we could see and wonderered about why the egg was there. On Tuesday the egg began to hatch and we can now see a dinosaur growing inside it - we are very curious about what will happen next. In Maths we have been doing lots of subtracting using ten frames to help us next week we will be looking at money so maybe you could help your child get a great start with the learningf and show them some money at home?

In Topic we have continued our learning about dinosaurs by looking at what are reliable sources of information and in Science we are looking at the different weather in each of the seasons.

This week in Year 1 we have been continuing our learning about the seasons. We have continued to use the book Tree by Britta Teckentrup. Here is a link to a video of the book if you would like to enjoy it at home.

The children created some amazing freeze frames of each of the seaons at the start of the week and have gone on to produce a piece of writing about the setting written as though they were the owl who watches the seasons come and go.

In Maths we have been working on learning our number bonds to 10. This week we have been looking at addition pairs and next week we will be moving on to subtraction.We have used numicon and ten frames to support our learning.

In topic we started our learning about dinosaurs creating a timeline of events from 65 million years ago to the present day and in Science we have continued our learning about seasonal change.

All of Year 1 will be presenting an assembly to parents on Tuesday 19th November at 9 10am and we would love to see you there!

This week we have started some of our new topics. In Science we have started learning about seasonal change and in History we have started to learn abour dinosaurs.

We have looked at the beautiful illustarations and used them to help us to describe the setting in each of the different seasons. We bacame authors and illustrators when we designed our own big write sheet inspired by the book.Next week we will be writing in character as the owl.

In Maths we have been using ten frames to show and recognise amaounts. Next week we will be using them to look at number bonds and addition.

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 21/10/2024

This week we have had a fantastic Curriculum Week based on Incusion and Diversity.In English we used the book 'All Are Welcome' to do some fantastic drama and poster making. Here is a link to the book so that you can enjoy it at home.

The children have been inspired by Lee Pearson, a paralympic equestrian champion,who can control a horse just by using his hips. We have explored our own talents and realised that we all have different talents that make us special and unique. Lots of children were keen to show off their talents in Mrs Glynn's assembly!

In Maths we have been doing lots of learning about length, learning how to measure with non standard units like cubes and how to use a ruler - maybe you could try doing some measuring at home? Either using non standard units like pasta or beads or with a ruler.

Next term our topic is dinosaurs and there is some home learning linked to this on the website.

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 14/10/2024

This week we have done some fantastic learning about Autumn. In English we read an Autumn poem and wrote our own based on how all five senses are affected by it. We then performed our poem - you will be able to see it when it is Year 1's assembly in Novemeber!

In Science we also focused on our senses, particulary smell and taste. The children tried to guess what was in some containers just by smelling them and tasted sweet, savoury and sour food- they were not very keen on the lime!!

In Maths we have been doing subtraction both practically and using pictures - perhaps you could do some taking away at home?

Next week it is our curriculum week on Inclusion and Diversity until Thursday, then on Friday we have a day celebrating Black History

Year 1 Weekly Blog WB 7/10/2024

This week in Year 1 we have continued our learning based on the lovely book 'The Lonely Beast'.On Monday the children received a letter from the Beast asking for their help to find him a friend. The children used the book to decide what the friend would have to be like - one great idea was that he needed to be adventurous because the Beast loved walking and climbing mountains another one was that he needed to love eating cake and drinking tea. The children have looked at what the features of a letter are and have used them in their own letter.

In Maths we have been adding two amounts together. We started by using counting objects to make sets then combining them and counting again and at the end of the week we have been able to write an equation using + and = and solve it practically. Perhaps you could try this at home with your child?

In phonics we have now moved onto phase 5 and the children are learning to read and write different graphemes and phonemes - we are looking forward to welcoming lots of parents to our Phonics workshop on Friday!

Next week we will be looking at some Autumn poems in English and subtraction in Maths.

This week we have been doing some fantastic learning about the book The Lonely Beast by Chris Judge. Here is a link to a video of it if you would like to enjoy it at home.

The children have produced some fantastic character descriptions of the Beast and will be writing a letter to him next week. In Maths we have been finding one less than a given number - first by using sets of objects, removing one and counting the set that remained, then moving onto using a number line. Perhaps you could practise this at home?

We started our Art topic this wek and the children researched the life of Andy Warhol then experimented to create a self portarait with different media!

We have also moved onto phase 5 in our phonics - learning some tricky new sounds. There will be a parents workshop on Friday to allow you to see how phonics is taught to your child and it would be fantastic to see you there!
