What an exciting week we’ve had in Reception! From storytelling to number games, and celebrating British Science Week, there’s been so much learning and fun to be had. Here's a little peek into what we've been up to:
In English, we explored the delightful story What The Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. The children loved hearing the tale of the clever ladybird and her farmyard friends. They particularly enjoyed retelling their favourite parts of the story. Afterward, the children used their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences about their favourite moments. It was amazing to see how they applied their growing understanding of sounds and letters to create their own sentences. Their enthusiasm for storytelling continues to grow, and we can’t wait to see their confidence develop even further.
In Maths, we focused on ordering numbers to 10. The children had lots of fun during an activity where the cheeky kangaroo made some sneaky changes to the number line while they weren't looking! It created a fun challenge for the children to work together to put the number line back in the right order. Once the number line was restored, the children had a go at cutting out numbers from 1 to 10 and carefully sticking them in the correct order. It was a great way to practice number recognition and sequencing, and they all did brilliantly!
This week also coincided with British Science Week, and our Reception scientists had a wonderful time exploring how things can change and adapt. We learnt about the fascinating adaptations of sea creatures, discovering how different animals have special features that help them survive in their environments. The children were particularly excited to learn about how caterpillars change into butterflies, and we had some creative fun by making our own caterpillar chains to represent this amazing transformation.
To bring science to life, we also took part in some fun and active learning experiences. We did sea creature yoga, stretching and moving like various sea animals—what a fantastic way to get our bodies moving while learning! The children also had the chance to plant potatoes, which sparked plenty of excitement and curiosity about how things grow.
It’s been a week filled with imagination, teamwork, and exploration, and we’ve loved every minute of it. From writing stories to planting seeds, the children have shown such enthusiasm and curiosity, and we’re so proud of all their efforts.
